Seventh-grade students at Irving A. Robbins Middle School in Farmington have been working on a service project in conjunction with Memorial Day and their study of the Middle East. Students are collecting soccer balls for an organization called Kick For Nick. Nick Madaras was a soldier from Wilton who was killed while on active duty in Iraq.

The following is from the Kick For Nick website, www.kickfornick.org: "While home on leave from Iraq in July 2006, Private Nicholas Madaras rounded up as many soccer balls as possible to bring back to the children near his post. Being a passionate soccer player, he wanted to give the balls to the children as a gesture of good will. Unfortunately, Nick was killed by an IED on Sept. 3, 2006 and was never able to distribute the balls himself. Instead we have taken up a crusade on his behalf to fulfill his dream."

The students are involved in all aspects of the planning, including the collecting, packing and mailing of the soccer balls and equipment. Collections will take place at the school beginning on Memorial Day and continue until June 10. New and gently used soccer balls, cleats, jerseys, lightweight pumps, and net bags will be collected as well as cash donations to pay for the shipping to military bases in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rita's of Farmington, 358 Scott Swamp Road, has donated frozen treats for the homeroom that collects the most soccer equipment.
