EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The East Syracuse-Minoa school district is on a mission this weekend to collect as many soccer balls as possible to send to children in Iraq.
The "Kick for Nick" foundation began from an idea Private Nick Madaras of the US Army had to help kids dealing with the war. Nick was a passionate soayer, and after joining the army he was sent overseas.
While there, he realized the children didn't have many soccer balls to play with. He began collecting them to deliver to the kids, but he was killed by a roadside bomb before he could hand them out. So now, friends, family and supporters have taken up his crusade.

"If we can give a kid who doesn’t have a soccer ball a soccer ball in the midst of that terrible situation and they can take a soccer ball out and play the sport and they can play it and get away from reality for an hour, then it was all worth it,” said Dale Johnson, coordinator.
